Study on antioxidant activity in vitro about different solvent extracts of fruits of Pyracantha fortuneana

  • Objective: To evaluatethe antioxidant activity of fruits of Pyracantha fortuneana comprehensively, and explore the relationship between the antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content. Methods: Extracting fruits of Pyracantha fortuneana with 75% ethanol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate,n- butanol and water extracts were obtained. All extracts were evaluated by DPPH free radical and ABTS+free radical scavenging activity, the total reducing power, the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiment( FRAP) and the total polyphenol content. Conclusions: All extracts of fruits of Pyracantha fortuneana exhibited antioxidant activities. The water,n- butanol and ethyl acetate extracts both exhibited preferable antioxidant activity, the petroleum ether extract had the weakest antioxidant activity.Antioxidant activities of both extracts were generally positively related with the total polyphenol content. The water extract showed the highest radical scavenging rate on DPPH and ABTS+,the IC50were( 0.76 ± 0.03) mg / m L and( 1.71 ± 0.10) mg / m L. The ethyl acetate extract showed the highest value of FRAP with( 382.20 ± 4.72) μmol Fe2 +/ g. The highest content of total phenolics was from n- butanol extract with( 2763 ±3.91) mg GAE /100 g.
